As an Internship, I worked at Napa River Pet Hospital under Dr. Carrol and all of the other Doctors and Veterinary Technicians working at the same establishment. I have always loved animals, which is why during my sophomore year I thought I wanted to be a veterinarian. I thought that when I went to college I wanted to study veterinary medicine and work as a vet tech, but over the next 12 weeks I spent working there, I realized that I wanted a different job for myself. Here I am going to explain how I realized I wanted to be a research scientist with a major in molecular biology, rather than a vet tech working with domestic animals.
My job at the Hospital was pretty straight forward, I worked mostly in the back with all of the other vets, and I cleaned up at the end of the day when they needed me to. At times I would assist in surgeries by passing the medical tools which I soon had a name for, and helping the animals wake up after their surgeries. Although I love working with animals and learning new ways to treat them, I realized that I would rather be behind the microscope developing new ways to treat the animals than actually working with them in a clinic. I also learned something new about myself, which was that I wanted to study ocean animals more than regular domestic pets. I wanted to help out turtles, whales, and dolphins, not dogs, cats and birds. I realized that I had a preference despite me having a dog and a cat, along with bunnies and chickens at home.
I loved working at my internship, even though I know now that being a veterinarian isn’t what I wanted to really do. I wanted to help animals, but I didn’t know how I wanted to do it. I now know that I want to study Molecular Biology in college, as well as working in double majoring in theater. I knew my passions for theater since I was a young girl, but I never could figure out what my dream job was. Working in a veterinary clinic opened my eyes to new possibilities, and helped me learn that my dream job was to work in a research facility, studying the pathogens of ocean animals and how pollution and global warming is changing the health of ocean animals. Applying to college has been a lot easier because I know now what majors I want to pursue, as well as what type of school I want to go to. I can thank my internship, Napa River Pet Hospital, for making me realize my true passions, and helping me grow further as a both a student and a future molecular biologist.
